| Marshall Warehouse |
| It's hard to believe this magnificent inner-city warehouse was once a derelict horse carriage workshop. |

For owner and architect, Sam Marshall, the renovation has been a labour of love. And it seems all Sam's hard work has paid off he recently won NSW residential architecture's top honour, The Wilkinson Award.
The warehouse is a home and architectural studio in Darlinghurst, Sydney. Built in 1903, Sam has incorporated many of the building's original features into the current design. Best of all, the renovations didn't cost the earth just $60,000 plus endless hours of hard work by Sam and his father.
Sam has transformed the old warehouse into a livable bachelor pad by adding all the necessary mod cons, such as windows, plumbing and electricity. The structure has been stabilised with steel framing. Sam also created additional living space, including a small deck and walkway.
To add authenticity, some areas of the warehouse remain untouched. At the top of the stairs is the spot where an old telephone once lived. A former owner used the wall as a jotting pad and some of the numbers still remain.
Working with a tight budget, as well as the original design, Sam wanted to keep things simple. He loves the generosity of space and freedom that the warehouse offers and has incorporated this into his design. The bathroom, for example, doubles as a laundry, with the white goods hidden by colour-back sliding doors.
Sam had to be especially innovative to keep to his low budget. One technique he adopted was to finish the bathroom walls with galvanised steel panels. Beneath the stairs is a toilet and hand basin formed in concrete. The mould for the basin was a wok and the water drops from copper piping. The off-form concrete stairs are rough, which is ideal for a warehouse with a workshop history.
Sam loves the Darlinghurst location. The warehouse is private, yet close to the city. He enjoyed working with an old inner-city building and found restoring the warehouse to its former glory, an uplifting challenge. Sam's hard work and the innovative design techniques used to create the warehouse were recognised by The Wilkinson Award.
Sam runs Architect Marshall Pty Ltd. His team of five enjoy residential architecture, including new house and warehouse conversions. Sam was included in Davina Jackson's recent exhibition titled "40 Up: Australian Architecture's Next Generation". The exhibition focussed on the abilities and work of Australia's young architects.
Marshall Warehouse is a single bedroom abode, designed to be the ultimate bachelor pad. While Sam loves his home, he is newly married and is selling the warehouse to move into more "marital friendly" digs.
