By combining east and west design features, the owners of this Sunshine Coast home have the feeling of being on holiday every day. Awarded the Sunshine Coast House of the Year 1999 this Balinese style home was built while owners, June and Thomas Welford were living in Indonesia in a cramped hotel room.
Architect, Douglas Cromb of Coolum designed the house to combine the Welford's western needs with eastern traditional design. Walking through the gatehouse entrance is like entering a resort. June was in charge of the interior design, having accumulated most decorations from overseas travel, especially Indonesia. However, it was important to June to furnish the house in a style familiar and comfortable to her family, so many items were things the children had grown up with.
The house was designed so air-conditioning wasn't needed. With high timber vaulted ceilings, fans and high windows, the breeze comes in from the top of the house to keep it cool. Tiles throughout the home also help keep the temperature down. Tall windows with cedar shutters open the rooms and add a greater sense of space by bringing the outside in.
The home is a series of four pavilions linked by stairs. The areas are the master bedroom and ensuite; the children's pavilion, which includes four bedrooms and a recreation room; and the living and dining areas which lead through to the kitchen and laundry. There is also a humidity controlled stamp room and office. Other luxuries include a sauna, wine cellar and a professional tennis court, situated in a quiet and hilly part of the property. Visiting friends and family love the house so much they don't want to leave which is understandable considering the great sense of peace that comes with home's resort feel and the luscious property looking over the ocean.
Not only is the home's design a prizewinner, the bathroom is in a league of its own; winning the Best Bathroom Award. Entering the master bedroom through a set of ornate antique, carved Balinese doors is like entering luxury itself. The large shower features multiple shower heads and spa jets so it can be used as a shower, bath, or spa and is tiled with an intricate mosaic pattern. The bathroom extends outdoors, opening onto a formal courtyard garden which has a typical Balinese feature of an outdoor shower.
This paradise wouldn't be complete without fauna as well as flora, with kangaroos regularly visiting the garden.
