Caversham Cottage is one Fairfield's old original weatherboard homes. Built in 1880, this charming historical cottage is now on display in the Fairfield City Museum & Stein Gallery. A visit to Caversham Cottage is a step back in time. It stands in an old mini-village with a slab hut, general store, schoolhouse and fully operating blacksmith nearby.

Caversham Cottage was named after a small town in England. It was bought for just twenty pence by the Jeffress family over 100 years ago. Eva Stone (nee Jeffress) was born in the cottage in 1895 and lived there most of her life. In 1986 Caversham Cottage was destined to be demolished so to save it from this terrible fate, Eva donated the house to the Fairfield City Museum. It was rebuilt and restored to its new location by the Lions and Apex Clubs of Fairfield and Fairfield City Council.

The cottage was originally situated at 63 Smart Street, Fairfield. On this site, the home had two rooms and the kitchen in a separate building. Caversham Cottage is a prime example of the Australian Georgian style of architecture with its weatherboards and corrugated iron gable roof.

Caversham Cottage remains relatively untouched by the changing world. Inside, the cottage reflects domestic life in the early 1920s. To make sure the display is authentic, it was put together by a curator and includes an old mantle-piece, a gramophone and a bookcase filled with novels that originally belonged to Eva.

Eva has many happy memories of Caversham Cottage. She recalls one of her favourite past times in the old house was a family sing along. To make sure things at Caversham Cottage are just as they should be, Eva visits her old home on a regular basis.
