Recap

Our House is following the construction of a project home from start to finish. Building a new house can be a viable solution for many people wanting the security and rewards of home ownership.

When we first met Danielle and Lionel, and their two small children, they were renting a small duplex, and needed something bigger. A large one-level house is ideal, (no stairs for safety reasons) and, together with financial considerations, a project home turns out to be the ideal solution.

The block of land chosen is near the end of a cul-de-sac, situated in a subdivision in Sydney's outer north-western suburbs. The project home ("Lisa 4" - built by Allam Homes) includes four bedrooms, a single living level and lots of living space. They have made changes and additions to the original plan, which are detailed in Project Home-Week 1. See the diagrams of the house plans below.

Site Visit-Week 3

Since the couple last visited the site, the framework of the house has been completed, along with all the brickwork. The roof tiles have been laid, the guttering and fascia boards have been installed, together with the plasterboard walls and ceilings.

Some minor problems were encountered by the couple. Danielle had originally opted for blue benchtops in the kitchen, but when the correct shade was un-obtainable, a cream colour was decided on. The chosen cupboard handles were also incorrect, but they were assured that these would be replaced.

A stain-resistant Dupont Stainmaster II with Repel carpet (blue shade) was chosen by the couple. It is 100 percent nylon as opposed to the more natural wool choice, to help with their son's asthma condition. The bathroom building work had also progressed, with doors hung, along with the fitting of architraves and skirting boards.

Another minor problem was the incorrect setting (wrong side) of a sliding door in the living area, together with the wrong size of tiles being delivered. All these minor problems were fixed at no charge by the building company. It is fairly normal to expect that even a well-organised job such as this one will have some minor problems to sort out.

TipCheck and recheck your specifications with your builders.

Join us again next week when we pay another visit to the site.
