Thunderbird Constructions, perched on the waterfront of Rozelle Bay, Sydney, is a refuge for used marine paraphernalia, ranging from wharf posts and bollards to old rope cables, anchors, pulleys, snap-locks and shipping containers.

The saviour of this "stuff from the sea" is owner and procurer Kotton Patterson, originally from Oklahoma, USA, who has been collecting the "odd and unusual" ever since he was a toddler.

Kotton's passion for pre-loved marine matter originates from his days of waterfront work. His occupation as a builder of sea walls prompted him to acquire the Rozelle harbour-side land to store materials and from there his enthusiasm for collecting took over.

He has a list of favourite and fruitful "secret" sources such as junk bins, building sites, markets and old yards and quite often comes upon objects accidentally. Hunting down his "trophies" astride his Triumph motorcycle, Kotton searches for anything and everything that can be "put back to work".

Kotton has made recycling into an art form. He not only sells his "wares" from his outlet Thunderbird Constructions to "anyone who'll buy" (from landscape designers to artists to owner / builders) but he also supplies his services to work on one-off creative projects.

Amongst old marine paraphernalia sit objects of art and pieces of sculpture cleverly designed and created by Kotton himself. Even his office has been transformed from an old shipping container, containing various art forms and a massive rotating timber table. Off the main room is a small verandah where Kotton kicks back to take in the expansive harbour views.

At Thunderbird Constructions "everything is for sale". Some items have a set price, but more often than not, they can be had after an enjoyable spot of bargaining.
