Our House takes a first look at Newington, a staged housing development that will be home to the athletes and officials for the Olympic games in Sydney in the year 2000. The Olympic Village development continues up to the year 2005, with a mix of houses, town houses and apartments being built.
The first construction phase, which is not actually part of the Olympic set-up, has mostly been sold and a number of houses and apartments are already occupied. The second and third stages will be the Olympic Village. This will consist of permanent dwellings from stage two that have been modified and adapted for the athletes and officials. Modular home designs make up the third stage.
All the houses and apartments are based on environmentally sensitive designs. Rooftop cells will deliver "green” electricity to the village, forming the world’’s largest solar powered village. Eight of Sydney’’s leading architects have been involved in the design of Newington. As a result no two homes or apartments are exactly the same. Although floor plans are consistent, exterior features and colours vary.
In early 2000, Mirvac Lend Lease Village Consortium (MLLVC) will hand over part of Newington to the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG). At that time, the permanent dwellings within the Village will only be partially completed. Kitchens and laundries will not be installed but will be provided through communal facilities. SOCOG will install the furniture and fittings.
The Athletes Village for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide accommodation for 15,300 athletes and officials during the Olympics and up to 7,500 athletes (1500 needing wheelchair access) and officials for the Paralympics. The Olympic Village will contain 868 permanent dwellings with temporary additions and up to 300 specially designed modular buildings.
In the permanent dwellings, dining rooms, living rooms and garages will be converted into additional bedrooms with temporary walls to accommodate everyone. The rear yard of each house will have an additional (temporary) building installed to accommodate a further four athletes. A 4 bedroom home will accommodate up to 16 athletes, and there will be one bathroom for every four athletes. The modular buildings have been designed so that they can easily be sold and dismantled after the Games.
After the Games, the temporary works and installations will be removed and the houses and apartments sold to the public, once kitchens and laundries are completed. Construction will also commence on the building of further houses and apartments. When complete, Newington will house more than 5,000 residents, in a total of 930 apartments and 1,100 houses.

The modular buildings are selling for between $21,000 - $39,000. (Self-removal from site).
