1 This new system is called Alloc, and it's joined together with aluminium strips, providing great strength and durability.
2 There's no underlay required because it's already on the underside of the boards, but it's best to put some plastic down first when laying your floating floor over concrete, to protect against moisture. It's also important that the first row of boards is laid straight, as it sets the pattern for the rest of the floor. If the first row is slightly out of line, then the rest of the floor will follow.
3 As you lay the boards flat, the aluminium strip locks them into place, eliminating any gaps. With conventional flooring, it's the joins that have a tendency to absorb moisture, causing the timber to expand and crack. This system has wax impregnated into the tongue-and-groove as a kind of damp-proofing. The makers say that the aluminium strip gives a tensile strength of one tonne for each square metre of planking and won't come apart - unless, of course, you want it to.
4 The core of each plank contains a high-density wood fibre with laminate on the top and bottom, which ensures better resistance to hard knocks. A major advantage of this system is that you can place your furniture and walk on it straight away, as you don't have to wait for any glue or varnish to dry. Alloc comes with a 15-year warranty and in a range of 17 different colours.
