| We visited the owners of a single-storey fibro-clad home who had decided to give their house a traditional cottage look. They wanted to create a sandstone look on a restricted budget. They decided to use GranoClassic, a new textured finish from Wattyl. |

To prepare for the application of the GranoClassic, the fibro weatherboards were removed and replaced with fibre-cement sheeting, which provides a suitable base. Once this has been done, the joins must be patched with a cement-mix mesh. Incidentally, putting up new cladding gave the owners the opportunity to install some much-needed insulation.

When the joins are dry, the walls are primed with a flexible acyrlic render, as well as an undercoat of paint.

The top coat is the GranoClassic, which is an acrylic-based textured finish. It's part of Wattyl's Granocite range, which they say will give the look of cut sandstone. It can go onto any cement or brick surface and, depending on the effect you want to create, it can either be sprayed on or applied with a trowel. A trowel application will create a dressed or worn stone finish, while spraying creates carved stone effects for unusual shapes. Lines can also be carved into the finish, so that it looks as though it is made up of blocks.

Finally, a clear glaze goes on to seal and protect. This is done with Granoglaze Satin, which also stops dirt getting into the pores of the GranoClassic. GranoClassic provides the house with a more solid, uniform look with a sandstone appearance.
