| Painted Finish Kitchen Makeover |
New homeowners often find that there's not much money left in the bank for kitchen renovations after mortgage repayments. Well, we came up with a few budget based ideas that made quite a difference to a young couple's kitchen.

1 On the positive side the kitchen had plenty of space so the only major structural change involved was pulling down a timber veneer dividing wall. The pink laminated benchtops were also removed to make way for their 90s replacement.
2 Next to go were the tiles and it was at this point we discovered there was a little extra work ahead of us.
3 We had to replace the plasterboard on the old wall that had been broken when we removed the old tiles, but while it looked fairly disastrous, it only blew the budget out by around $150. Much of the work was carried out by a company called Mr Benchtops, which offers demolition of the old, and design and construction of the new. The new benchtops were rolled-edge pine board in Antique White Velvet Formica. A breakfast bar was installed to divide the kitchen and living areas creating a spacious open-plan look. To complete this part of the makeover a new Clark sink was also installed. On the opposite wall, a new pantry and melamine strips across the open shelving cleaned up a once untidy area.
4 After lifting the green shag carpet from the floor, we discovered old vinyl tiles underneath. However, to our delight, cypress floorboards were lying waiting to be revived. The floor was treated with four hours of serious sanding followed by a coat of sealer and a coat of polyurethane, which bought the floor back to its former glory.
5 Our next hurdle was to merge the old with the new to create a unified style, so a blue painted finish on the cupboards and a secondhand fridge were used to give us the rustic look we were after.
6 With all the surfaces clean and sanded, two coats of Misty Blue Wattyl Ceramacoat were applied and left to dry. To accentuate the finish, we used a new product from Wattyl, Decorative Effect Solution. Mix this in equal parts with the top coat, which was Blue Lotus, and add a dash of water. Spray the surface with water and apply generous strokes of the top coat. Then simply drag a damp muslin cloth down the surface. It is a good idea to finish up with a clear varnish for extra protection.
7 Our next job was the tiling and the owners opted for a basic off-white tile from Tilecraft to match the benchtops. A hand-painted sun-flower border tile across the main wall was a fresh finishing touch.
A bright sunny yellow colour on the walls, some new timber venetians, and our tired old kitchen had dramatically sprung to life. And while we did go slightly over budget, it was still a remarkable change for a relatively small cost as we managed to save money by avoiding major changes.
