This colonial-style home was built around 1880. It has all the olde-worlde charm of a classic Queenslander but, as with many old homes, the house has subsided. Over the years the stumps supporting the house had sunk slightly. The doors, windows and floors were no longer level.
1 The problem was fixed by lifting the house off the ground and levelling it all up. Once the dirt had been dug out around the foundations and the electricity and plumbing were disconnected, large jacks were used to slowly raise the house. Wooden and steel supports were used to hold the house at its new height. The whole process took several hours.
2 The house was eventually lifted by 1.5 metres, which not only improved the views, but should also help keep the house out of reach of termites and white ants. It also leaves a lot of room for new additions underneath.
3 Steel RSJs were installed to support the main house, as well as new stumps and new peers. Finally, the power and water were reconnected.
