This bedroom was dressed up by creating a canopy, adding a new bedhead and installing some new curtains. The key to the new look was fabric. The colours were chosen to tie in with what was already in the room.
1 The first job we tackled was the window. The venetian blinds were taken out and replaced with drapes called Clever Curtains. The drapes come already hemmed at the base and are available in a variety of pleats. They can be hung from a rod, wings or track. All you have to do is choose the fabric and style you want, then have them cut to the width you need.
2 The bedhead was cut out of the 18mm thick MDF (see pattern).
3 To upholster it, lay the bedhead down on some wadding and cut out the shape, adding about 7cm all round, except for the base. Glue the wadding to the front of the board and glue and staple the overhang to the back.
4 Lay out your fabric, making sure the right side is facing down. Cut the fabric following the shape of the bedhead, this time adding about 25cm around the board. Pull the fabric quite firmly, but not so hard that you pull the pattern out of alignment. Staple the material to the back of the bedhead, turning under the edges as you go. Attach the bottom first, followed by the top, then fold the corners and fix the sides.
5 Measure what height you'd like the bedhead to be, then make up two legs and screw them to the back of the board.
6 Attach the fabric canopy to the wall above the bedhead. To make your canopy, simply take two lengths of fabric with some curtain tape attached to the top of each one. Pull the strings inside the curtain tape to form the pleats. The two pieces are then sewn together at intervals.
7 Fix an L-shaped bracket to the wall above the centre of the bed. Attach two hooks either side of the bedhead. Slip the top of the canopy over the bracket and drape the fabric drops around the bedhead, securing the sides of the canopy with some tiebacks. We made ours with some leftover material from the bedhead. We also made up some matching tiebacks to hold back the curtains.

Cost A makeover like this can be as expensive or cheap as you like. It just depends on the fabric you choose.
