The Sweeneys plan to turn their outdated '70s bathroom into a clean and safe bathroom for their kids. They will incorporate a number of bright, fun products that can increase your bathroom's safety.
Tony and Denise Sweeney bought their Killara home around two years ago. They loved the leafy position but weren't quite sure about some of the '70s style décor. First on the renovation list was the family's second bathroom. When they moved in the bathroom had pink/purple paint with wall to wall mirrors, so they did a quick emergency makeover. When the time came to finish the job, they chose a stone and earth theme to reflect their home's peaceful bush setting.
The bathroom was in fairly good condition but it was definitely dated. Tony and Denise were aiming for a modern, timeless look that wouldn't require another renovation in ten years time. There were also a number of logistical problems that they wanted to fix. The room was quite dark so new white tiles and extra lighting was installed to compensate. The taps needed replacing as well, as the pipes all leaked.
They all like taking baths, but the kids were fast out-growing the mid-sized tub. The creamy brownish bathtub was replaced with a white bath that was bigger and deeper.
When installing a new bath it's better to use a flexible sealant like silicone rather than grout, which will crack over time. To get a clean edge when using silicone sealer, fill the gap, dampen the area with soapy water or glass cleaner then run your finger along the edge. The silicone in the joint repels the moisture but excess material wipes cleanly away.
The vintage '70s vanity was replaced with a modern white Laminex unit providing more storage space for towels and bathroom products. The frosted shower screen was missing a door, so it was replaced with a clear glass screen. When installing a shower screen, either Grade A (toughened or laminated) or Grade B (wired) can be used.
The brown tiles on the floor were replaced with cream tiles with a stone finish, laid diagonally. The brownish wall tiles were removed, and white tiles were laid from floor level to in line with the top of the shower screen. A line of small square tiles broke up the large wall tiles and provided a feature. A new hand rail and chrome taps in the shower, bath and vanity were installed. The old vent in the roof was replaced and two extra lights added, one over the shower and one over the vanity.
The aim was to modernise the room and provide a cheerful, clean space for the kids. To make the room extra safe, several features were added. 'Tap Safe', an anti-scald device was installed in the bath tap. Once the water temperature reaches 38 degrees, a valve stops the water flow until the heat is adjusted, preventing burns. These can be purchased for around $30 from most hardware stores.
Fun sea creature bath appliques provided a non-slide surface for slippery kids, and they have another advantage. When the water temperature reaches 35 degrees, the perfect temp for your tot, they change colour. These can be purchased for $8.95 for 12 from Dream Baby.
The final accessories by Target Home give the room a cheerful, kid-friendly feel such as a frog soap dish $10.95 & toothbrush holder $14.95. Also brightening the room were green towels $9.95 each with matching handtowel $3.90 and face washer $2.20, honeysuckle yellow towels $14.95 with handtowel $8.95 and washer $3.95, and fluffy blue towels $24.95 with handtowel $13.95 and face washer $6.95.
The result, a bright, cheerful and safe bathroom for the kids to splash around in. |
