| Old Kitchen Makeover |
| Out with the old and in with the new! |

It seems the owner of this kitchen hasn't heard of the saying "out with the old and in with the new". She's decided it's time to renovate, but not in the traditional sense of the word. Laminate benches and modern appliances are being replaced with old-style fittings and fixtures.
The owner, Dominique McAdam wants timber benchtops and cupboards and a custom made storage area for her new Liebherr fridge and freezer. In fact, throughout the house she has hidden away any modern appliances. The televisions in a cupboard and the microwave's behind a restored trunk.
Dominique has already started on the kitchen renovation. She has installed an unusual splashback, that ties in with the old-style theme. The splashback is made from pressed metal and painted antique green. This may be a modern idea, but the end result is quite antique looking and gives the kitchen a country feel.
She's also attached a couple of display units to the walls. There is a large timber frame on one wall, fitted with coarse fencing wire. This will be used to hang old pots, pans and cooking utensils that will add character and warmth to the kitchen. On the opposite wall is a wooden display cabinet with decorative iron brackets. This is home to an assortment of old style cups and saucers.
Now it's time to tackle the bulk of the kitchen renovation. The rip out is first on the list. This involves removing the existing cupboards, laminate benches, sink, taps, and even the window.
Dominique has bought a 1930's Early Kooka electric stove from a bed and breakfast cottage in Berry. It is quite unusual, with a thermometer on the side. When the desired temperature is reached, the stove is turned off, but will maintain the set temperature for several hours.
The free standing fridge will be replaced by a separate undercounter Liebherr fridge and freezer. Hidden under the bench, the fridge and freezer won't be visible unless the cupboard doors are open. They are ideal for apartments or in small kitchens where space is an issue.
The modern stainless steel sink will be replaced by two old-style cast iron sinks, which have been re-enameled. These are coloured the same yellow as the stove. Decorative old English style brass taps will replace the existing ones.
The glass window is replaced with a beautiful leadlight. Resizing the hole involved removing some of the brickwork. The leadlight was bought from a recycled goods centre in the city and adds the finishing touch to the old fashioned kitchen.
Dominique's entire kitchen is built from old skirting boards, floorboards and scrap timber by builder, Tony Miller. The laminate bench tops are replaced by a timber slab, and the cupboards are built from an assortment of timber planks. |
