| Boat Bed Makeover |
| Tara sets a nautical course when she redecorates a young man's bedroom. |

This spare room has been used for storage up until now, but with a new arrival on the way, two year old Connor is moving in. The family are water-skiers and boat lovers so Tara is going to make a boat-shaped bed for him and theme the room "nautical".
First project is a simple slat bed and handy storage box to fit across the width of the room, underneath the window. The side panel will be in the shape of a boat so the height of the mattress has to be marked and the shape determined. While Ed cuts it out and softens the edges, Tara paints the storage box in Ultramarine Blue. Soft closing hinges are an essential safety items on any kind of toy box, to prevent little fingers getting hurt. These are called adjustable lid stays and your local Home Timber and Hardware store can order them for you.
Above the boat-bed, Tara is making a new window treatment in the shape of a sail. Easy to use deco rings snap on to the canvas which is held in place by velcro and braid. The bed is dressed with a doona cover & fabric themed around the window treatment.
A nautical mural is continued throughout the whole room. It's a river scene with lots of boats and covers the walls and furniture. The walls have been painted Dulux Wash n' Wear Baby's Room Blue, which is a great background colour for the sky and the water.
Tara blends blue and green to paint the water then wipes the excess off with a damp cloth. This technique suggests the idea of water, rather than making it look totally realistic.
An old water ski, on some decorative MDF brackets, makes a handy shelf in keeping with the nautical theme. The ski's just screwed into the brackets. Tara has bought some boat shelves, seagull book ends and picture frames to complete the look. |
