| Dark living room makeover |
| Tara brightens up the living room of an apartment built below street level. |

This inner city apartment is actually built below street level. As a result, the only natural light that comes into the living room is through a light-well in the corner and some small windows close to the ceiling. Well, we can't punch extra windows into the walls, but with a little creativity Tara can make the room lighter and brighter.
BEFORE
- Dull walls and ceiling with peeling and flaky paint on the wood trim.
- Poor lighting makes the room quite dark.
- No practical storage.
- Little bench space for knick-knacks and other items.
- Old, unattractive lounge suite.
DURING
- Walls painted Dulux Grand Piano for a fresh new look. To bounce light around the room and to add a special effect, a top coat of Dulux Pearlustre paint was applied in a criss-cross motion. We chose Raw Pearl (silver).
- Additional lamps add light to the small room.
- A simple coffee table with storage space for videos and books built from MDF. A second-hand mirror attached to the top of the coffee table will help bounce light around the room.
- A side table built from Pine and with a mirrored top also built.
- A second hand lounge suite replaced the existing sofa.
- Scatter cushions added.
- Fabric stretched over a timber frame to create an interesting artwork for the wall.
AFTER
- Pearlustre walls have a shimmering finish and add sparkle to the room. The paint glimmers, so it effectively reflects light and makes the room a little brighter.
- Lamps provide additional lighting, which is directed at the walls and mirrors so it bounces around the room.
- New coffee table and side table provide extra bench and storage space. Their mirrored tops reflect light.
- New lounge suite is practical and more attractive, suiting the new look room which has a slight "1950s" theme.
- Second-hand glass fronted cabinet also provides additional storage and matches the existing 50's style furniture.
- Existing wall lights replaced with more practical shades which emit more light into the room.
- Scatter cushions in shimmering fabrics reflect light and add a splash of colour.
