GDD - multi colour livingroom
A decorating dilemma can be as simple as deciding what colour to paint the walls. But, for Jacqui and David of Ferntree Gully in Victoria, that dilemma has turned into a decorating disaster.

They love colour, but can't decide on a colour scheme for the living and dining rooms. As a result, nearly every wall is a different colour, and they all clash with her new lounge suite. On top of that, the plastering work's not finished, the lounge is too big for the small living room, some skirting boards and cornices are missing, and the list goes on.

BEFORE
  • Old, dirty carpet and floor rug in lounge room.
  • Unpolished, uneven floorboards in dining room.
  • Chipped, painted floorboards in hallway.
  • Ceiling in hallway and dining room in need of plastering.
  • One wall in dining room in need of plastering.
  • Plastering patchwork needed on all walls.
  • Not enough wall space in lounge room.
  • Missing skirting boards in both rooms and hallway.
  • Missing cornices in both rooms and hallway.
  • Patchy paint work on French doors.
  • Walls painted in a mismatch of colours and paint effects.

DURING
  • Floorboards sanded and graded (levelled) and old carpet removed.
  • Invicta Naturals carpet laid in lounge room, dining room and hallway. The colour of the new carpet is Darling Downs.
  • Plastering in both rooms and hallway.
  • Cornices and skirting boards in both rooms and hallway.
  • Ceiling, walls and wood trim painted in both rooms and hallway.
  • Door in lounge room blocked in and levelled to create more wall space.
  • Light switch on lounge room wall moved to create more functional wall space.
  • Walls painted Dulux Gypsy Canvas, with a feature wall in each room painted Dulux Rich Red Violet. Wood trim and French doors painted Dulux Handmade Linen.
  • Feature wall in the lounge room decorated with a diamond pattern. This is done using a plumb bob to mark the walls and a paisley print stamp to apply the orange paint.
  • Feature wall in the dining room marked with masking tape and painted with different coloured stripes.

AFTER
  • New carpet creates a uniform look between the rooms and result in an open plan living area. The carpet also hides the untidy floorboards in the dining room.
  • With fresh, new carpet, Jacqui can dispose of the "tiger" rug that hides the stains on the existing carpet.
  • The newly plastered walls and ceilings enable fresh paint to be applied.
  • Cornices and skirting boards give the rooms a neat, finished look.
  • The blocked in door way creates a larger wall, against which the entertainment unit is placed. The "new" wall increases the possible layouts for the furniture. This is important in such a small room.
  • A new colour scheme and fresh coat of paint solves Jacqui's "decorating disaster" and gives the entire area a great new look. Tara's colour scheme also matches the existing furniture.
