This multi-purpose family room is a struggle for the family to keep tidy. One end is used as a home office, at the other the three boys play and watch TV. Shirl and Tara will convert this into an orderly, functional space by dividing the two areas with a practical wall unit. Tara will create an area for the kids to play while the family can still watch TV and Shirl will installing some desks for the study.

Before
  • Untidy dysfunctional room, attempting to serve both dad and the kids.
  • Limited home office with little storage.

During
  • Desk built in to one side of the room. A cabinet maker has built the components so Shirl will fit it all together. The desk is approx 750mm high supported by battens on the wall. The desk tops are Formica in "Mornington Blue", quarry finish. Everything is held together by connectors that sit in rebates under the tops. The panels are veneered particle board.
  • Shirl also installed a multi purpose unit which a cabinet maker has prepared. This will go in the middle of the room to divide the office space from the children's play area. It's made from Hoop Pine and stained with Cabot's.
  • Tara made a Lego storage unit with 8 different compartments and colour-coded lids so that it looks like a huge Lego block. She undercoated it in black rather than the conventional white to make the final colours look a lot richer.
  • Tara also painted a raw pine table in a Star Wars theme using Jo Sonja's paints, again undercoating it in black.

After
  • Room divided into two sections so there is a separate kids area and adults' office space.
  • Better use of space and tidier storage options.
  • Home office updated and organised.
  • Play area fun and creative.
