Formex and the Our House magazine recently launched a competition to find "Australia's saddest kitchen". Ann Humphreys' from Forester Beach was chosen as the lucky winner. Her dated and unattractive kitchen was given the star treatment, with a Formex facelift to the value of $15,000.

Galley Kitchens worked closely with Ann to design her dream kitchen. In addition to the $15,000 prize, Ann decided to have a few extra renovations done, including a new ceiling. She also wanted an internal archway opened to make the kitchen into a much bigger room.

The existing windows were removed and replaced with smaller ones. The wall tiles were also removed. Ann was particularly pleased to see several feature tiles go, especially one picturing a yabby and a glass of wine! For something different, a magenta glass splashback from Creative Glass was installed. The glass splashback has a shiny finish and needs no grout lines.

The cupboards weren't just old, but decaying. Years of wear and water damage meant the chipboard was rotten and the cupboard doors about to fall off. The red benchtops weren't very inviting either. The new cupboard doors are Formex Swiss Pear (mild timber finish) and Wiluna White (off white). The benchtops are Shingle Carnation (mottled black, grey, pink and blue).

The new appliances are from Worldwide Appliances. A Miele semi-integrated, stainless steel dishwasher was covered with Formex Wiluna White to match the rest of the kitchen. There is also a new Westinghouse upside down fridge, and a Blanco stainless steel double sink.

A new timber finish floating floor completes the new look kitchen. This is installed over the top of the existing floor and is easy to maintain. The wood-look laminate flooring is from Floors First.
