| How to combine classic and contemporary decorating styles. |

The owners of this house are torn between contemporary and classical style. How do they combine the old with the new and make the conflicting colours work together? Tara shows us how to solve this design dilemma and create a style for the room that really works.
Before- Mixture of contemporary pieces such as yellow leather lounge suite, grey carpet, cool olive green feature wall and black fireplace. As well as some classic pieces; a large gold framed mirror, timber side tables, timber writing desk and a chandelier, as yet unused.
- The cool dark green colour on the walls emphasises the space of the room.
During- Walls painted a warm yellow colour called "Tuscan Gold" from the Dulux Suede Effects range. The once green wall required a few extra layers of paint to cover up the old colour. The top coat was applied with a brush using a criss-cross motion which gives the finish extra depth and texture.
- Scatter cushions and throws have been used on the couch to break the yellow couch away from the yellow walls.
- The dramatic black fireplace has been repainted with a soft white Dulux enamel called "Chalk USA".
- The existing white curtains featured on each of the three windows are to remain. However, to add interest, a decorative pelmet has been made at the top of the three windows. The pelmets have been made using four pieces from 9mm MDF. The sides have been attached to the top and then the front pieces are butt joined together using chipboard screws. A pine batten on the inside has been attached for extra strength. The pelmets have been upholstered with a light blue gingham which contrasts beautifully with the yellow walls. Spray adhesive was used to hold the wadding in the position, then the gingham fabric is stapled over the top. The pelmets are then held in place with L-brackets.
After- The result is a room that is more intimate and cosy.
- The yellow walls instantly warm the room creating a softer and cosier space. As well as bringing the room in, it will also help marry the different furniture styles.
- Blue bottles and ginger jars have been used to dress the room to create a country feel with a modern approach. The dark timber furniture and gold mirror will now complement the new style and not work against it. Lighting has been kept low to create further warmth and for a more dramatic effect the chandeliers have been installed.
