| A rusty old iron bed is brought back to life. |

This old wrought iron bed was bought at an auction house in a terrible state. It has black peeling paint showing the white undercoat and new brass knobs which don't fit with the desired antique look. We're going to restore the bed to its former glory with some help from the professionals.
SAND BLASTING Before we can repaint this old wrought iron bed, the surface needs to be cleaned. The old paint has to be scraped off and any lumps, bumps and rust spots removed. Sandpaper and a wire brush might get the job done, but it is time consuming, messy and takes a lot of elbow grease. That's where sand blasting comes to the rescue.
We are having the bed cleaned at "Advanced Sand Blasting & Coatings" run by Phil and Greg Horton. Sand blasting is used to clean surfaces and prepare them for a new finish. It is also an effective method for removing rust, oxidation and old paint. Old gates, toys or even cars can be stripped clean using this method.
Sand blasting is carried out in a special booth and the worker is required to wear safety gear. An abrasive material (steel grit, glass beads or sand) is forced through the nozzle of a specialised blasting machine at high pressure to blast away paint and rust. The abrasive material is propelled by compressed air or water. Sand blasting can be done wet or dry and at varied pressures. After the bed has been sand blasted, they will coat it with 1p zinc to protect against rust.
POWDERCOATING Next, we're going to visit Dean at Brookvale Powdercoating. Powdercoating is a tough, flexible and durable finish that can be applied to any object that can withstand high temperatures. There are a variety of coloured finishes available, although the powder is not a paint and the range is not as extensive as for paints. We are powdercoating the bed with Dulux White Birch Gloss.
Powdercoating is environmentally friendly, safe and low toxic. Its tough finish has a high chip resistance, making it an extremely popular choice. It is also very cheap, so it makes a great alternative to spray painting. This method is particularly good for restoring old furniture, bikes, etc from garage sales and auctions if you don't want to spend a lot of money on the restoration. A powdercoated product can last up to 15 years given the right conditions.
The powder has the consistency of flour and is applied electrostatically. This is done by "charging" the powder with 10-thousand volts and spraying on the bed which is hung on metal hooks. Next, the bed will be loaded onto a trolley and pushed into a kiln at 200°C. About half an hour later, it should be ready to take home.
