The owners of this town house are looking to transform a spare room into a guest room plus a space for when the grandkids stay. It will look like an 'adult' room with a cool, restful beach feel but can adapt when the kids come over. Tara shows us how to make the best use of limited space and storage by making two rooms from one!

Before
  • Room used for toy storage / spare room but messy and unorganised. Lots of junk lying around and not appealing for guests.
  • Located at front of house, therefore quite bright
  • Existing built in wardrobe and window
  • Walls, timber and ceiling white and freshly painted
  • Beige carpet in excellent condition
  • Newish white blind on window
  • Double bed ensemble in one corner

During
  • New raised timber base built for bed using current mattress. This will incorporate an under-bed toy storage area with access cupboards on both sides. Height of bed and base is 800mm.
  • New bedhead built extra tall with plenty of room for pillows, blankets and other linen.
  • Relocate bed to centre of the room to become main feature.
  • Walls painted Dulux Teal Zeal , an aqua green shade. White wash over the top to create soft beachy feel. Simply brush the paint on and blend it with a damp muslin cloth.
  • White primer tinted with wall colour used to base coat all the furniture. White painted over the top and wiped back with a cloth to create a distressed look.
  • An existing cane chair will be given a lift with some white spray paint.
  • Tara uses some wire to create cheap and charming curtain rod filials.
  • Doona remains white and apple green top sheet folded over it for a splash of colour.
  • Aqua, blue and green cushions scattered over the bed to add to beach colours. Tara made the covers using napkins from Grace Bros.
  • An old picture frame is brightened with a spray of silver and displays one of the grandkids' paintings. Plywood off-cuts are stained white and silver cake bases glued on to create interesting wall features.
  • A 'roll away' low table unit will be made to house games and books and become a kids' play table. When not in use, the open side of the unit would be against the wall and it becomes an adult coffee table. The swivel castor wheels on the old bedbase will be recycled and used on the unit.

After
  • Room transformed into bedroom for guests and grandkids' room when they stay
  • Room suits dual purpose and when not in use looks like an elegant adults' retreat.
  • Hidden storage for grandkids' toys and games keep room neat and easy to maintain.

How to make the new bedhead & base
  • The dimensions will vary according to the size of your mattress. We made the support frames from 70mm x 35mm Pine. The corners of the frames were screwed and glued together using half lap joints for added strength.
  • The height of the frames were 600mm but this can be altered to suit your own needs.
  • 65mm x 19mm slats were screwed across the frames to support the mattress.
  • MDF fascia panels and doors were used to cover the framing and create the storage space.
  • The bed head was constructed from 16mm MDF screwed and glued together, the two hinged lids were hinged from the back panel with non mortice butt hinges.
