Rock room
A bright and modern update for this subterranean family room.

Originally an open hole under the house, Ursula and Chris transformed this basement room into an entertaining area in the '70s. In its glory days it was the "party room" but is now cluttered and serving only as a junk storage space. With the couple planning to sell in the future, Tara's going to bring the room up to date and create a tropical resort. Being dark and damp, suitable floor coverings and plants are the challenge at hand.

Before
  • Room largely unused and uninviting
  • Large structural rock feature
  • Dark and damp

During
  • Remote control ceiling fans installed to create a tropical resort effect
  • Blond brick wall bagged using Porter's Roman cement. Mix cement, water and a coloured oxide called Parchment in cement mixer until smooth consistency reached. Wet the wall down first then apply with a spongy trowel.
  • Adjacent timber panelling and doors painted in Dulux Chalk USA
  • '70s pine table and benches sanded back and stained with Cabot's Crystal Clear in Satin. Damp the timber first so the stain won't absorb too fast and apply with a Rota Cota paint pad.
  • Soil and plants put in rock bed. Choose plants ideal for indoors that like wet feet and filtered light. We used anthurium, white butterfly and peace lillies.
  • To light the rock wall as a feature, we wired 5 "rock lights" to a transformer.
  • Tara made an abstract painting and framed it in a pine timber frame to add colour to the bagged wall.
  • To cover the old terracotta glazed tiles, we chose carpet called Tequila from Melded Fabrics and Kennon. It looks like sisal but it's synthetic and ideal for a damp area. Normally this carpet would be directly glued to the floor but we decided to make it into rugs, cutting it with a long metal ruler and Stanley knife. This way, if they get too damp, we can air them outside to dry. This material is also ideal because it doesn't fray.
  • For the large glass doors and windows, Tara made various vertical panels in different fabric and lengths and hung them from double bracketed curtain rods. She then used bamboo pieces as well as left over curtain rods threaded through the bottom to weight them down.
  • A piece of calico was hung behind the drinks shelf at the bar to conceal a storage area behind.

After
  • The room feels like a tropical resort with better lighting and ventilation.
  • The furniture has been updated in keeping with the new style.
  • A wasted space has become a great entertaining area that is stylish and attractive

Difficulty Level 2:5
Cement bagging takes a bit of practice to get smooth consistency and correct application on the wall. Cutting carpet requires some accuracy.
Ceiling Fans and Rock lights require an electrician for installation.
