Twelve-year-old Hannah and nine-year-old Bonnie have outgrown the décor in their rooms and want a fresh look as they head for high school. Tara is going to give the rooms a more sophisticated feel with a bit of help from Shirl. The rooms will become pretty and fun, as they love makeup and clothes, and also more functional, with extra homework room and a big bed for friends to stay over.
Before
- Flaky white paint on walls
- Small window in Bonnie's room
- Lack of storage for knick knacks
- Not enough desk space for computer in Hannah's room
- Both bedrooms very young looking
- Mismatched furniture
- No spare bed for friends who stay over
During
- Walls sealed, then given 2 coats of Dulux Linen
- Walls decorated with stripes/diamonds in Dulux Rose Petal and Sevres Blue
- Hat boxes for additional storage
- Bonnie's computer desk moved to Hannah's room
- Second hand and existing furniture painted to match and suit new look rooms
- Homework desk built for Bonnie
- Hannah's existing bed made into a small lounge with foam cut to size to make the cushioned seat
- Large curtain rod and lots of fabric used to make Bonnie's window look larger
- 2 single beds built for Hannah's room - they can be pushed together to make a larger bed when no friends staying over
Step by Step
1 Cut six legs to the required height of your bed, taking into consideration the thickness of your mattress.
2 Cut to length the two side rails, this length will be equal to the overall length of your mattress plus 10mm.
3 The length of the two end rails will equal the width of your mattress plus 10mm, minus 70mm for the side frame. The end rails sit inside the side frame.
4 Mark out positions of centre legs.
5 Mark out and cut half lap joints. Measure half the thickness of material. The amount cut out will be the same amount left on the joining piece. (see fig. 1)
6 Glue and screw side rails to legs and attach rail ends by screwing through side rails.
7 Cut slats to length, slats should be flush at both ends of the frame.
8 Attach slats to top of frame by screwing into top of rails.
After
- Bedrooms look less young but are still girly and fun
- Spare bed for friends who stay over
- Hannah has a double/queen bed
- Bonnie's window looks larger
- Furniture matches and looks appropriate for the room
Difficulty Level 3/5 Handyman skills required for building bed. Stripes and diamonds on the walls can be tricky.
Time Taken Total 5 days Painting: 3 days to paint walls, cupboards and furniture including masking the walls for stripes and diamonds. (allowing drying time between coats) Carpentry: 1 day for building bed, shelves and homework desk. Decorating: 1 day for putting up ready-made curtains and dressing room.
