Colin and Laura' s kitchen is in desperate need of an overhaul. It's a classic 70's masterpiece that they want to modernise. They've kept the original layout, which means they have only one wall for all the appliances. Rebecca looks at how Colin and Laura faced the challenge, and came out with a beautiful kitchen.

WHAT THEY DID
Colin and Laura began by throwing out the entire existing kitchen, with the exception of the microwave and breakfast bar. To save on costs, Colin went to a discontinued product sale and bought a cook top, sink and rangehood, (all worth $4,100) for only $3,000. He also purchased a new fridge — a GE Stainless Steel for $4,400 (including GST).

They transformed their cupboard doors with vacuum-formed vinyl in an antique white, and used a matt Curry Tigris Laminate for the bench top, with a 180 degree rolled edge. To enhance their modern theme, they installed a stainless steel sink, satin chrome handles in a 128mm bow shape, and a stainless steel bin (attached to the inside of a door underneath the breakfast bar). They also replaced the dated splashback with clean white tiles.

To save on storage, they created space between the cupboards and fridge for the microwave, freeing up the breakfast bar. They also improved their drawer space with deep pot drawers, and a utensil drawer directly under the hot plate.

Colin and Laura decided to install Elgas "Easy Gas" for their cook top. So, a gas bottle was placed on a concrete slab and attached to a regulator at the side of the house.

Total Cost
The kitchen cost $7,199 including GST for installation and materials (plumbing, splashback and electrical all extra). "Easy Gas" — $26 p.a. rental, $61 for full bottle and delivery. Elgas monitor the use and top it up before it runs out. Total (including conversion to gas) approximately $16,000
