The object of the makeover was to add colour and personality to a dull room. The first step was to paint the walls using a cheerful colour scheme. We used Dulux Wash & Wear 101, a durable and stain-resistant paint, in Quiet Blue and Vintage Violet (the occupant's favourite colours).
Next, an old desk was converted into a dressing table. First, the desk was thoroughly sanded to get rid of the old varnish, then undercoated. Once the undercoat had dried we applied our colour scheme, using the leftover paint from the walls so that the whole room was co-ordinated. We used Vintage Violet on the top and sides, and Quiet Blue on the drawers. We also bought some cheap beauty/vanity sets from the supermarket and used these to decorate the drawer fronts. A hot glue gun was a fast and effective way to attach the vanity set pieces. Finally, a colourful curtain was attached across the underside of the desk, providing a great place to hide any odds and ends.
Our next project was the study area. The owners wanted to restore the table some time in the future, so we only needed a temporary solution. This was achieved by wrapping coloured fabric around the legs of the table. The old dark blanket that covered the tabletop was replaced with a bright piece of purple brushed cotton.
The chair that had previously been used at the desk went back to its rightful place in the dining room, replaced with one bought at a garage sale for $5. It was wrapped in coloured fabrics to match the desk. Finally, butcher's paper, clipped onto a thick piece of cardboard, was used to create a giant scribble pad.
The sofa needed brightening up. It was still in good condition, but was now out of keeping with the room's new theme. A calico throw was made for the sofa; to keep it in position, we sewed four large buttons across the bottom and the back of the sofa and two buttons under each armrest. Corresponding buttonholes were made in the calico.
The cushions were also covered with calico. The two back cushions were dressed up with large felt flowers made by ironing double-sided interfacing onto the felt and then cutting out the desired shape. We decided on a simple flower shape with a separate centrepiece. Simply peel off the backing on the centrepiece and iron it onto the flower. Repeat the procedure to attach the flowers to the covers.
An inexpensive mosquito net was attached to the ceiling above the bed. It was decorated with felt flowers to match the sofa. Pinboards, painted with the leftover paint, were attached to the wall.
To complete the makeover, we added some fun and funky furniture from Happy House Design, including a pink mirror, a wall vase, a purple pedestal table and a lime coat hook. The final touch was the addition of a crisp new quilt cover.
