1
Take a look at the home of the Martin family, who were forced to renovate following a fire. The fire began in the master bedroom, possibly as the result of a faulty electrical appliance. Fortunately the family had installed smoke alarms and an electrical safety cut-out switch, which they believe were contributing factors in saving lives and property.

2
The master bedroom was completely destroyed. The home had ducted airconditioning and the fire caught hold in this and destroyed the attic as well. The lounge room, kitchen and bathroom all had extensive smoke and water damage.

3
The Martins managed to salvage some of their belongings, but the majority had to be replaced. The master bedroom was totally renovated. New moulded ceilings were fitted, as were new floorboards. The bedroom was also refitted with new furniture, windows and curtains.

4
The kitchen was renovated and the Martins put in a completely new bathroom. In the lounge room, the walls were stripped and repainted, a new ceiling and floorboards were added and a new lounge suite was purchased.

5
The Martins once again installed smoke alarms and the electrical safety cut-out switch. They also added a fire extinguisher to this list of safety equipment. Fortunately, the Martins were fully covered by their insurance; their advice to other home owners is to make sure you are fully covered, and to check and update your policy regularly.

6
Pamela Martin also suggests that you keep a list and photographs of your possessions and valuables, including the date and place of purchase and purchase price. This can make life a lot easier if items ever need to be replaced.
