Our House and Federal Minister for Sport and Tourism, Jackie Kelly, transform a sewing / storage-area into a colourful nursery, ready for her first child due in a few months time.

The baby’s sex is unknown, so a neutral but interesting beach theme is chosen rather than the traditional baby colours of blue and pink. The room is small (3.5 m square) and one wall is completely taken up by a mirror-door wardrobe.

1
One wall is painted with a fish and beach theme. The desired effect is similar in appearance to a “cross section” of the sea and beach; with weeds and rocks on the bottom, fish, crabs, starfish and other creatures in the middle, and then sand and people up on top.

2
An old circular mirror is turned into a life-ring blackboard in keeping with the nautical theme. Blackboard paint is used for the centre, so it will eventually become a display of the child’s creativity. First, remove the mirrored glass and backing from the frame. Paint the craft-wood backing with two coats of blackboard paint. While that’s drying, paint the frame of the mirror a bright red colour, using acrylic paint.

3
Tape off areas to paint white strips in four sections. Glue some rope-braiding onto the frame. Place the backing back into the frame and fold-down the clips so it’s secure. Drill two small holes into the frame and hang.

4
The pelmet in the room is then removed and painted a bright blue, with “waves” cut into the outside edge to support the nautical theme. A line of stenciled fish is then added along the top to complete the look.

5
A wall hanging has pockets sewn in to store the baby’s odds and ends. Use a piece of plain heavy-drill fabric, in a sky-blue colour and cut to the desired shape (145cm x 55cm), form a cylinder at either end, for the dowel, by sewing 7cm hems.

6
Cut the pockets to size, suiting your own needs. For our hanging, we have decided on 8 pockets, two large ones at the bottom (for nappies, change cloths, wipes, etc.) and 6 smaller pockets (for pins, tissues, crayons, whatever) across the rest of the fabric.

7
Paint freehand pictures onto the pockets to follow a theme (boathouse, lighthouse, fish, etc). If you are not comfortable painting freehand, you can also stencil on a picture (you can buy from a huge range available). Once the pockets are ready, sew them onto the large piece of fabric.

8
Cut the dowel to size and paint it in a contrasting colour to the fabric, then thread it through the hems at the top and bottom. We used some plastic fish heads in a $2 shop, and they were hung off the ends of the dowel for a fun look. A piece of rope was sewn onto the back of the fabric to serve as a hanger and suspended from the picture rail.

9
A pre-sized canvas floor mat measuring 90cm x 68cm was bought from a craft shop and painted a sky blue colour to match the colours in the mural. Paint with a water-based acrylic satin varnish, turn a 4cm hem under the corners and then glue down with craft glue.

10
A small paper lamp with stripes was purchased from IKEA. Measure the diameter of the shade and using a star-punch, cut as many shapes as needed around the bottom of the shade.

11
You can also purchase craftwood bookends from a craft shop, paint them to match the floor-mat, and then glue on some fun miniature beach balls bought from a local toy store to complete this theme. The room is now ready for a future Ironman or woman!
