Channel Nine's Money Show reporter Kim Watkins put her experience into practice during her recent kitchen renovation at her inner city terrace home. Kim loves cooking and was excited by the thought of her new kitchen, which includes a 90cm wide oven and cook top, as she loves entertaining and cooking.

A wall at one end of her old kitchen was knocked out to allow access to the living area, along with a side wall, to allow the installation of three bi-fold timber doors. Once the walls and old windows had been removed, the new cupboards were installed. Kim loves the knotty look of timber, so cypress pine was used for the bench tops to complement the existing floorboards. The relocated wiring for the new power points was plastered over and tiling for the splash backs was installed.

Kim is an ardent entertainer and she says that most people tend to congregate in her kitchen. The new open design allows her to interact with guests while cooking up her next gourmet meal. The bi-fold doors, when opened up, provide a view to the outdoor barbecue area.

Kim's Tips

Kim's main tip is not to pay in total for your appliances before you see them on site. She admits that she thought she was getting a good deal by paying in cash up front for her entire appliance package with a well known company, only to find she nearly lost it all when it went into receivership. The saga ended happily after another large appliance company bought it out. During her kitchen renovation Kim stuck to her budget and in fact allowed a contingency to cover extra costs.

Kim obtained eight quotes from builders and around five quotes from kitchen design companies. Her main advice is to "shop around". Offering cash payments can also lead to substantial discounts, but check out the companies concerned thoroughly first.

Kim agrees that a building renovation can be "dramatic" and maybe next time she would move out while it was occurring, "to save her sanity".
