Bamboo Courtyard Makeover

Bamboo has increasingly taken over the backyard of this renovated home and is the first item on the hit list. The bamboo is cut down with a chainsaw and the roots treated with poison, as it is a fast growing pest. A couple of small trees were also removed (with council permission) along with the pavers.

A new hardwood fence is built along the boundary edge of the courtyard. The framework is sunk into concrete foundations leaving the attachment of palings until after the surface has been re-paved, to ensure the correct height.

A water feature (statue of a "peeing" boy) is positioned adjacent to the far courtyard wall. The brick foundations are first laid for this and also for a planter box feature situated along the length of the new fence structure. A storage seat is designed for the middle of the brick planter.

The old concrete pavers are in reasonable condition and are relaid on the newly levelled surface. Before their removal, they were becoming uneven due to the aggressive growth of the bamboo roots. They are then scrubbed clean with chlorinated water. The bagged brick surfaces are painted with a weather resistant Pascal sunscreen cream acrylic and a long lasting Intergrain UVC lacquer is used on the fencing (honey colour).

Plants and shrubs are then added to finish off this courtyard renovation creating a peaceful haven out of a bamboo "jungle".
