These home owners are having their concrete slab patio revamped to get rid of stains and discolourations. CTI (Concrete Technology Incorporated) are specialists in concrete resurfacing and the process is an alternative to replacing the concrete with tiles or pavers.
It involves an application of acrylic modified cement, which bonds with the underlying concrete. It can even be applied over pebblecrete or tiles, providing that they are sound. The product can be used on driveways, paths, balconies, patios, interiors and pool surrounds.
Advantages of CTI surfacing:
1 Oil and stain resistant. Just hose away those car oil stains.
2 Acid and chlorine resistant. Ideal for pool surrounds.
3 Fade and slip resistant.
This low maintenance surface is 3-4mm thick, extremely durable and comes in a range of around 25 colours and textures. All surfacing work is carried out by qualified CTI tradesmen.
The surfacing process:
1 Preparation is important. First, any paint and oil stains are removed. Cracks are repaired using CTI's epoxy repair system. Any uneven areas are filled.
2 A high pressure water system blasts away any remaining grime and stains.
3 All nearby surfaces (gates, fences, fixtures, etc) are covered or masked.
4 A thin coating of the new surface is hand trowelled over the existing concrete to give a smooth, uniform surface, and allowed to dry (around three hours). The owners have chosen an Oxford Grey colour.
5 The individual pattern is created using tape and borders and motifs are sprayed with the chosen colour and allowed to dry (2-3 hours). The pattern in this case is adjoining squares in the centre of the patio.
6 The previously painted patterned areas are then masked to allow for the main area to be sprayed. This part of the colour will determine the dominant colour. Two or three speckled colours add highlights to the area and provide character to the final surface.
7 After drying, the masking tapes are removed, revealing the new look.
8 Finally, a sealer is applied to produce a long-lasting durable finish which resists staining and fading. The sealer is a solvent-based acrylic enamel. The completed work should be left overnight before walking on it and 3 days before driving over it or scrubbing.
The colours used in this example are Clay (trim), Salmon (main colour), Golden Wheat and Burnt Sienna (highlights). CTI recommends resealing after two years. The product comes with a 10-year warranty.

Cost $ 2,750 for this featured job. It cost about $57 per square metre and depends on the condition of the existing concrete.
