With the kids off to school it's time to reclaim their play area. An all-weather balcony will be transformed into a useful and comfortable living area with a subtle beach feel.

The traditional bright nautical colours of blue and yellow have been over done in the past, and as the home has walls of a creamy beige colour, some muted tones will be used on this balcony.

1. The floor of the balcony has a timber deck. It contains some dirty patches and also has crayon and paint marks in places. These areas are covered using a rattan mat which can be easily rolled up and put away when it rains, etc.

2. To achieve a 'greener' look, two fan palms in sandstone planters are added to each balcony corner. These plants are quite substantial and are perfect for both shady and sunny areas.

3. To add a touch of colour, four scatter cushions (navy, aqua, sage and ivory) are positioned on top of a weathered timber bench, which was already placed on the balcony. The wall space above the bench is partially filled by hanging several towels in similar colours, above it.

4. Potted citronella candles are placed next to the plants in each corner. Two tealight holders (on stakes) are stuck in each of the planters for added effect.

5. A small pine table is painted with two coats of quick drying Porter's Milk Paint. After the layers have dried, the table is rubbed with some steel wool or a scourer and then lime waxed. Rubbing back the top layer of paint allows the grain and colour to show through from underneath. Comprehensive instructions are packaged with the paints.

6. Finally, some multi-coloured glasses, together with a tray, are placed on the table. A cane basket, which can be useful storage for the kid's toys, also double up as a side table for drinks, etc. An old whicker chair and some shells to decorate the railing of the balcony completes this beach theme.
