After returning from an African safari, the tenants of this flat decided to give their lounge room an African style makeover. With a budget of around $500 and no permanent fixtures allowed (due to the tenancy), the idea is to create a theme which can be easily transported if they move.

Although this makeover involves more decoration than renovation, the idea is not to just go for the typical tribal theme - spears and spots - but a more contemporary look using the natural colours and textures of Africa.

The terracotta loose couch cover and rug will be the dominant features of the room and provide a focus to work around. Cardboard storage boxes are used to remove some of the clutter from the room, and are stacked on top of one another at varying angles. They are in keeping with the African theme and are an alternative to a large piece of furniture such as a desk or armoire.

Next, a terracotta pot containing some twisted willow branches is placed in the corner of the room. To balance the look of the room, place larger items opposite each other. In this case the shelving unit is positioned across from the lounge.

In order to fill up some wall space and provide texture, several straw hats are positioned on removable hooks above the lounge. They are placed in a straight line. The tip here is never to line up the objects that you are attaching to the wall with the edges of the furniture. This creates too many uniform straight lines and gives a fixed and "stitched up" look.

A new wicker chair is added to provide additional guest seating, and a cabinet from the spare room helps to fill the other corner. Some mood lighting is added in the form of an orange coloured table lamp to complete this earthy and natural look.
