Mini Laundry Makeover
An old-world laundry gets an economical update.

This tiny laundry still has old concrete washing tubs, an untreated concrete slab floor and is difficult to move around in.

1
The washing machine and old tub is removed and the walls cleaned using sugar soap in preparation for painting. A fresh yellow colour is used. It may be a good idea to include a mould stopper in the paint to prevent mould attack.

2
After cleaning the floor with an acid wash, a self-levelling product is used, called Mariner Flo-Top 90. The powder is mixed with water, forming a slurry which is then poured over the floor. The product sets quickly and you can walk on it after two hours. This creates a level surface for the new tiles.

3
Next a range of self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles are laid. Comprehensive instructions are included on the pack. To ensure that the tiles are laid straight, measure halfway down each of two adjacent sides of the room (at floor level), and lay out two intersecting strings as a marker and guide so that the tiles start off from the centre.

After laying out in both directions from the centre, in a cross-shape, remove the backing paper and stick the tiles down. Keep your fingers off the back of the tiles as the adhesive is very strong.

4
Two new Stylus Impact acrylic laundry tubs are next placed in position. The tubs have the same combined capacity (45 litres), but take up less floor space than the old concrete one. The space saving leads to the washing machine being re-positioned next to the tubs, making for a more useful laundry space.

5
Two rails are installed in front of the hot water system, adjoining two walls. On this can be hung calico laundry storage bags, making better use of space available. Next, a pull-out clothes line is attached to a wall and a Robin Hood ironing centre (containing board and iron) is attached to brackets on the wall. This means that the board can be swung out to the side for easy ironing access.

6
Lastly, a new shelf is installed above the washing machine, and this mini makeover is complete.
