At a building materials auction, you can pick up a huge range of goods at bargain prices. Every second Tuesday at Gray Eisdell Timms in Sydney, home owners, owner-builders, builders and tradesmen turn up to bid for building products such as timber, power tools, kitchens, bathrooms, tiles, windows, bricks, pavers and much more.
Most items are sold for between 30 percent and 50 percent of their retail value. Many of the goods on auction are cancelled orders, surplus stock or incorrect orders. Sometimes the only problem is that the packaging is damaged. However, there are also items that are scratched, damaged or broken. Much of the machinery is ex-council stock, while the timber is usually second grade, which means that it has more knots and irregularities. You do need to do your homework in regard to the items that you are after and get along to the inspection day.
As at all auctions, the goods are sold to the highest bidder. At the building materials auction, however, if there are large amounts of the same product for sale, the highest bidder gets first choice as to how much they want. Other bidders can then pick up the remainder of the goods. All electrical items carry a sales tax and you will need to pay an auctioneer's fee for all goods purchased.
