Philip and Patsy Alder were first attracted to their beautiful Chevron Island home, on Queensland's Gold Coast, because of its position on the Nerang River. However, the house had been built 30 years earlier and needed some major renovations.
Philip and Patsy created a home with lots of light and space by pitching the roof to three different heights and adding skylights wherever possible. They also extended the hall area and built a guest bedroom where the garage used to be.
The spectacular northern outlook had a strong influence on the design of the house. The living room and kitchen face the water, with the adjacent main bedroom and ensuite also enjoying the same view. Full-length sliding doors allow both light and breezes to flow in. The doors are glazed with a strong, tinted film, which also provides security.
Outside, the deck resembles a wharf. Treated hardwood decking edges the property and sails extend from the roof to provide sun protection. Next to the deck is the pool, which also overlooks the river. Wrought iron screens, twisted and painted teal blue to create a beach theme, provide security for the front door and windows. Tiled murals displaying colourful beach scenes add brightness to the front gate and the wall surrounding the pool.
Philip and Patsy decided against having a study in their home and instead built a mini theatre. This houses a large TV, six velvet-covered seats and Toby, a classic bellboy mannequin that proffers a tray of snacks.
