| It's well known that we spend about a third of our lives in bed, so it's important to have a good mattress. If you want to take the backache out of bedtime, consider having your old mattress renovated. |

Even the best mattresses can become lumpy and uneven, causing back pain and a lousy night's sleep. Instead of buying a new mattress, a more economical alternative is to have your old one renovated.

Rebecca visited The Mattress Renovators' Sydney factory, where truckloads of sorry old mattresses are brought in every day to be renovated. After the mattress is disinfected with an antibacterial spray, the border tapes are removed.

Then the top cover and padding are rolled back, so that the inner springs can be inspected and any broken springs replaced.

Extra padding is then stapled across the center of the mattress, giving support where it is most needed. The padding consists of a spun bond backing with an imported coir filling, which is topped with 5mm of chipflex foam.

The old padding and cover are rolled back onto the surface and stapled together. A new layer of fire-retardant padding is glued on with a spray adhesive. This layer sits over the old cover.

Everything is held together by a new quilted outer cover and side panels. The final stage is to stitch on a new border trim. Once stitched up, the mattress is 7cm larger and looks and feels like new.
