We visited Housewarming, a new furniture shop in Melbourne. Housewarming is owned by Pat and Joanna Thomas, a young and enthusiastic couple who buy furniture, renovate it themselves and then sell it. Their philosophy is "Buy it cheap, give it a facelift and sell it cheap". This means that customers walk away with affordable furniture, which is probably why Housewarming's stock is in and out within a week.

Pat and Joanna obtain their furniture from all over the place, including auctions and garage sales. If the piece is structurally sound they buy it and give it a brand-new look. Pat sands the piece and fixes any problems while Joanna, who is a self-taught upholsterer, does the recovering.

The design duo have also given their 1950s rented flat a makeover for a song, with a new coat of paint, budget furniture and window dressings.

Joanna has a few tips for anyone who is renovating, refurbishing or just interested in design. She advises not be afraid to use colour and to never drive past a garage sale, because you don't know what you will find. Don't dismiss an ugly piece of furniture. Instead, just imagine it in another colour or another fabric.
