1
Measure the perimeter of your window. Then work out how many balsa sheets you will need for the height and width of the window.

2
If you need more than one sheet per side, position the main sheet in the centre and use masking tape to attach equal smaller pieces at either end. This will make the join seem deliberate. Cut the balsawood with a Stanley knife against a steel ruler. Mitre the ends (diagram A).

3
Starting from the midpoint, use pencil to mark every 5cm on the back of the balsa.

4
You could cut decorative shapes out individually using a Stanley knife but the easiest way is to use a Punch Art frame. These come in different sizes and designs. Punch out every second mark. Turn the balsa around and punch out all the marks in between (diagram B).

5
Turn the balsa over so that the good side faces up. Glue the cut-out pieces back onto the balsa in between each gap (diagram C).

6
Use a dry brush technique to apply brown acrylic paint and then gold over your design. Before you apply the paint, wipe off any excess on newspaper. Concentrate the paint around your cut-outs to emphasise the 3D look.

7
Apply Estapol over the balsawood to emphasise the wood grain.

8
Use removable adhesive to attach the balsa frame to the wall.

9
Use muslin for the final touches. Rip the edges of the fabric instead of cutting it. We hand-stitched some extra punched-out balsa pieces along the ripped edge of the muslin. Attach the muslin to the existing window frame with Velcro adhesive circles.
