Denis Hartman, who founded Sydney-based Auld Lang's Line Clothes Line Services, repairs old and battered clothes lines for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one. He repairs gearboxes, replaces bent or broken arms, and rewires the lines. Denis also installs and removes clothes lines. And if yours is in need of replacing he'll sell you a second-hand one.
It only takes him about an hour to fix a clothes line and it costs around $50. That's about one-fifth of the cost of buying a new one.
A few hints to keep your line in good working order: squirt some oil in the gearbox every few months, keep the drain hole clear, and don't let the kids swing off the arms. One more bit of advice if you have trouble winding the line up and down, rather than taking to it with a hammer (which will only make things worse), get Denis in to have a look at it.
