This boy's first year at school is imminent and so the bedroom is in need of a change. The makeover will include new paint, curtains, doona covers, etc. A computer desk will be added to help with the increasing homework.

1
The furniture will be rearranged to make way for a new desk. This will include a computer "hutch" that sits on top, together with a triangular extension piece that sits flush in the corner.

2
The chest of drawers is cleverly hidden by placing it in the wardrobe leaving enough room for the clothes.

3
The room is given a fresh and cheerful look by painting it with a Yellow Tulip colour (Dulux).

4
New curtains are made using simple and bold colours. Checks or stripes (used here) are good for mixing and matching with other furnishings. A doona cover and matching pillowcases are made from the same fabric. Remember when choosing the colours that fashion fads are just that and only last for a couple of years at most.

5
To keep things nice and tidy, make a toy box from a cane basket. Using a red colour spray paint, spray the entire outside surface. Make sure you use light, quick-drying coats of paint to avoid drips and runs.

For decoration, use coloured felt "car" cut-outs, and stick to the basket surface using craft glue. See diagram for the car template design. Alternatively you can make other designs by using basic clip art (usually supplied with your operating system software) and printed from your computer.

6
Next, a desk kit (Ikea) is assembled. Just follow the step-by-step instructions. It would be difficult to make a DIY desk for a similar price, so it represents good value for money.

7
To add to this bargain find, a "triangular" MDF extension is made up to fit into the corner of the room. (The triangle shape pieces consist of one 90 degree and two 45 degree angles). This is made up of two shelves, one made to sit flush with the surface of the computer desk and the other to sit underneath for some extra storage.

8
Three square holes are cut out close to each of the "points" of one of the triangular pieces. This is for the three pine leg supports to pass through. They are then screwed at the other end (through the top) to the undersurface of the top triangular piece.

9
Dowel pieces, positioned in holes drilled fairly close to the top of each of the legs, (enough room to form a handy space between shelf levels) provide a "stop" to fix the lower shelf in position. Once the MDF unit is sitting flush against the wall, the computer desk can be placed in position in front of it.

10
The computer desk "hutch" (for the monitor) can now sit on the triangular extension. Give the surfaces a quick sand and paint. We have chosen a pale blue gloss acrylic paint (Dulux, Delft China).

11
The small bookshelf in the corner of the room is removed to make way for wall mounted raw pine shelving. This is painted to match the computer desk unit. A notice board is also added. The frame of the board is painted in the same matching colour. A desk chair and lamp complete the look.
