The bathroom as featured will get a much-needed colour facelift at a budget price. The tiles will not be replaced, however the grouting will be given a makeover and tile transfers added to simulate expensive feature tiles.
1 Use a grout rake to scrape out the old mouldy grout from between the tiles. Next remove the silicon sealer from behind your vanity unit, shower base and screen (if applicable).
2 Mix some new grout powder with water until a paste is formed and apply evenly over the tile walls using a squeegee. Ensure that all cavities and lines are filled. After allowing around 15 minutes for the grout to set, wipe the excess off by using a damp sponge, in a circular motion. Take care not to draw the grout out from the cavities. Continue this process, after repeatedly rinsing and cleaning the sponge in cold water. This will take around an hour for an average bathroom.
3 Tile transfers are used to add colour instead of using costly feature tiles. They are quick, cheap ($10 per pack of five) and easy to apply. First stick some Blue Tac onto the back of each one and position around the walls until you are happy with your design and layout. Remove one at a time, leaving the Blue Tac on the wall and submerge in warm, clean water for about 30 seconds.
Slide off from the backing paper and place in position on the wall. Don't forget to take the Blue Tac off first. Once correctly aligned, smooth out the wrinkles and bubbles and dab dry with a soft cloth. Continue with each transfer until finished.
4 To compliment the transfers and to make cleaning easier, a self-adhesive, decorative strip (Deco Edge), is added to the top edge of the bathroom tiles.
5 To avoid future mould build up and for a neat finish, the area around the vanity and shower unit is sealed with a waterproofing PVC strip called Coverseal. The strip is cut to size before fixing tape is applied to the back of the strip. Make sure the area of wall to be sealed is thoroughly clean and dry first. Then the Coverseal strip is joined using a bonding glue.
6 The area between the shower screen and the walls will be covered using another PVC strip called Cornertrim. This is cut to length and applied to the junction with the twin beaded adhesive strips on the back of the product.
