| Two Way Fireplace |
| An open plan space becomes two cosy rooms after adding some brickwork. |

The owners of this home are reversing their open plan look. They need a playroom for their children and also a home office formed out of the current living room. A two-way fireplace, sharing a main flue, currently divides the room in the middle.
A new wall will be built either side of this double fireplace using CSR Hebel aerated concrete blocks. They are light, easy to lay and cut and have good sound-proofing qualities. The ceiling is around 2.8m high and the room is 2.4m wide.

The carpet, timber flooring and some picture rail is cut away to expose the base of the existing brickwork. A layer of damp course is next laid to stop moisture reaching the new brickwork.

A 10mm bed of sand cement mortar is then spread on top of the damp course. This extra thickness allows for the leveling of the first layer of blocks.

Continue with the next course of bricks, using the thin bed adhesive in between and staggering the joints as in normal brick laying.

Brick ties are used to tie the new blocks into the existing brickwork on either side. Cuts in the new blocks can be easily made using a tungsten saw to allow the ties to be hidden.

After laying the wall sand, bag or render and paint to match existing surfaces. Plasterboard could also be glued to the wall.
