Indian Bedroom Makeover
An Indian adventure has a comfortable and exotic ending.

This bedroom owner recently spent six months touring India. On returning to his inner-city home, he missed the colour and richness of his travels.

Because it is a rental property, no structural changes can be made. However, a new look for the bed, wardrobe and mirror will transform this bedroom for very little money.

1
A plain pine wardrobe is to be given an aged rustic look with a layered distressed paint finish. The paints chosen dry very quickly and are easy to apply. First sand back until the raw surface is achieved. Paint on the first coat (yellow). After around five minutes it should be dry.Give it a light sand with medium grade sand paper.Follow the same steps for the next two colours (blue and red), using a rag to spread the paint evenly into the corners.

2
A gold stencil pattern is then applied by using stencils from a craft shop (or make your own) and dabbing the gold colour over splashes of random blue background shapes to make the designs stand out. We have gone for a carnation flower image that looks quite effective and enhances the Indian look.

3
Next, a plain mirror is transformed by using four aluminium sheeting edge strips which are pre-cut to fit over the frame of the mirror. Draw a pattern onto a piece of paper and tape to the aluminium using masking tape. Use a nail punch to hammer the pattern into the sheeting. You will end up with a raised image on the frame, in a dot pattern. Glue the sheeting to the frame using construction adhesive.

4
The bed is centred on the wall and to make it more of a feature, it is given a sofa bed look .just right for lounging on. The doona is rolled up to resemble a large bolster cushion, with tied tassels holding it in place at either end. A new light bedspread will show off the colourful cushions which are then scattered around the end of the bed.

5
Using the Ozzie Mossie Nets kit, assemble the rectangular bamboo frame, following the instructions supplied (takes approximately 30 mins). The kit is suspended from the picture rails using fishing wire, as it was not possible to screw a hook into the ceiling.

6
An ugly blind is replaced with a curtain rod and a translucent white curtain. This will make the room appear lighter and more expansive. Next, fabrics from the occupant's travels are draped over a piece of dowel and positioned on the wall, again hanging from the rails. A few final touches include incense and candles, and the mood is set.
