By putting some extra effort into making these re-useable decorations, you can reap the rewards for many years to come.
Chair Covers:
1 Chair covers are to be made from acetate satin in a cream colour. You can also use the same material for a tablecloth. The cover is basically a sack shape that is sewn up on both sides (see Diagram 1). The longer side of the cover goes over the front of the chair, while the sides are pinned together at the back using a safety pin.
2 Fabric paint is used to decorate the top of the chair covers. Simply draw your designs on paper, place the design under the fabric and carefully trace over with the 3D fabric paint. Allow to dry.
3 Finish by wrapping a red or green sash around the chair. You could use the same material.
Table Runner:
1 Cut a piece of paper to fit your table top. Fold the paper forwards and backwards and cut out star and snowflake designs along the fold. This allows you to make multiple cut-outs in just one or two goes. Unfold and flatten out and position on the table.
Plate Decorating:
1 Add star stickers to the outside rim of plates and glasses to give a sparkle to the place settings. These can be easily removed after your meal.
Serviette Rings:
1 Cover the outside of a matchbox in the same paper that you used for the table runner. Tie a ribbon around the box and thread your napkin through.
Name Tags:
1 Take the candle out of a tea light. Turn the metal surround upside down and push into the top of an apple. Take the metal surround out and use a knife to dig out the apple piece so that you can fit a full tea light flush in the apple. Use some left over 3D paint to seal the join between the tea light and the apple. Tie a ribbon around the apple to hold the name tag.
Centrepiece:
1 Stretch out a star garland along the table runner. Then loosely place nuts, lollies and cinnamon sticks along it.
Christmas Balls:
1 These can be used to decorate the walls. Cut a large styrofoam ball in half using a coping saw. Divide each hemisphere into three segments by tracing around a rubber band with a pen. Use a Stanley knife to make a 1cm cut along the pen lines.
2 Cut fabric pieces slightly larger than each segment. Push the edges of the fabric into and along each cut. Continue until all three segments of the ball have been covered with fabric. Use contrasting colours. Glue 1cm-wide ribbon over the joins of each segment.
3 Cut a piece of cardboard to fit at the base of each hemisphere and glue in place. Neaten by gluing ribbon around the edge. Attach your finished balls and a 3cm wide length of ribbon to the wall using Blu-Tac.
