Many people are in the situation that their old tiled, fibro, cement, corrugated roof has seen better days and needs replacing. It contains asbestos and to remove it would incur expensive additional costs.

Savana Steel tiles are one solution available on the market. They can be laid over the existing roof, making the job quicker, cheaper and more convenient for the home owner. They come in a range of colours and are, in fact, tiled 'sheets' made from high quality steel, of 1.3m width. They still retain however, the traditional Australian tiled look, and being much lighter, do not require the strengthening of the structure underneath in comparison to clay tiles. They are approved for rainwater collection use, are cyclone proof, and are guaranteed for 25 years.

1
Once the old roof capping, guttering and downpipes are removed, vertical timber battens are secured to the existing roof.

2
This is done by the acceptable method of punching holes in the roof through the pre-drilled battens (the pieces of asbestos removed in this way are too large to be breathed in). Any residue should be wiped with a wet rag, then the battens are fixed in place with screws.

3
Horizontal battens are then nailed to the vertical ones, and the fascia and guttering fitted. The tiles are then nailed to the battens and the new capping placed in position.

4
This product can also be laid over an existing corrugated iron roof or it can be installed on a new home.

Warning: Asbestos (in fibro cement sheets) should be disposed of correctly, with no uneccessary breakage if at all possible. It should be placed into a plastic-lined damp bin, to minimise air-born particles, and then the bin securely sealed and disposed of at an approved dump site.

Disturbing the asbestos by drilling, sawing, sanding or other abrasive materials is not recommended because particles less than 3 microns in size (microscopic) are dangerous to respiratory health.

Also, P1 or P2 class masks should be worn when handling the asbestos sheets. These guidelines can vary from state to state, however, and should be checked before building work commences.

Asbestos is generally not considered dangerous unless it's disturbed. In this example the roof area was around 250 sq/m.
