In order to make a pleasant room for a new child's arrival, the owners are converting a spare room/art studio into a nursery. They live in a Federation-style two-bedroom semi which is at least 70 years old.
With its soiled and dated carpet, cracked and mouldy walls, and lack of character, this room needs a makeover in order to present a grand welcome for the little occupant who's due in a few weeks. First the old carpet is removed, along with the masonite underlay and two different types of lino. There are even remains of an old fireplace hearth. This will have to go because it could trap moisture, which would eventually ruin the floorboards around it.
Floorboards affected by dry rot are replaced with those made from recycled kauri pine. This is more expensive than new timber but, when sanded and polished, it matches the existing floorboards. The sanding is left until after picture rails and cornices are added, along with a new plaster ceiling rose. A huge vertical crack, which may indicate potential problems beneath the flooring, is filled with plaster. If this opens up over the next few months, the owners will call in an expert for advice.
The plasterwork is best left to a qualified tradesman. Next, the rough and uneven surfaces of the walls can be smoothed out using an all-purpose, pre-mixed plaster. Just scrape it on in smooth, thin layers. After 24 hours it is ready to be sanded to a flat surface, ready for painting. Use medium to fine grades of sandpaper as necessary.
A lime-proof undercoat sealer is used, together with a low-sheen, fume-free top coat. Porter's Limewash, in Roman Ochre, was used here. This is safer for infants, particularly because solvent fumes are not released into the air.
The owners are decorating the room in an ocean theme, with plenty of bright paintings on the walls. Even the chest of drawers has a range of fish motifs, photocopied from the curtain design, stuck on!
