1 This bathroom needed a makeover to allow the current owners to sell the house, but they didn't want to spend a fortune. The wall tiles were old and dated, the basin and vanity cabinet were falling apart, the toilet cistern had aged and the owners needed to squeeze more storage space from the tiny bathroom.
2 First, we removed the bathroom door and door knob. A paint removal product called Peel Away was used to remove the existing paint from both sides of the door. This product allows the safe removal of lead paint, instead of sanding. The owners then wanted to leave the wood in its natural state.
3 Next, we cleaned the ceiling and top of the walls with a sugar soap solution. The existing floor tiles were left in place and tiled over using a flexible adhesive as a base.
It is best to hire a professional to do the tiling, although you can save money by removing the old tiles yourself; not for the faint-hearted! An industrial hammer drill is the best way to remove stubborn tiles, and this can be hired from your local tool hire merchant at a reasonable daily rate.
White high-gloss tiles from Tilecraft were used. The listello line and black capping tie in with a white checkerboard pattern on the floor. Note that these two decorative rows cost more than all the other tiles combined!
4 Dulux Mouldshield was chosen for its guaranteed properties that repel mould growth for up to two years, and this was painted on in two coats.
5 The aluminium window was not replaced, but instead painted with a coat of brown enamel to match the natural cedar window strips, then attached with Liquid Nails after the application of a metal primer.
6 Finishing touches include a new vanity (semi-recessed, white high-gloss front and sides), second-hand cistern, resurfaced bath, a storage unit and new accessories to give a stylish result, at a price that won't blow the budget.
