A Melbourne warehouse that was originally a leathergoods factory has been converted into an amazing residence, redolent with history. Virtually everything in the house has its own story. There are pieces from schools, hospitals, science labs and even a gaol.
The living area, situated on the ground floor, has a spacious open-plan design. There is also a music room that is located behind imposing 1830s French doors. The bathroom and garage are closed off with cell doors originally from the old Dandenong Gaol. The doors, which were picked up from a second-hand yard for just $100 each, are inscribed with the thoughts and names of former prisoners.
There are no modern whitegoods visible in the kitchen. These are hidden under the stairs and behind distressed metal doors. The kitchen has been fitted with an original Kooka double oven, old storage drawers from a hardware outlet, and a shoemaker's workbench. The kitchen sink is an old laboratory sink, finished with surgery taps.
Upstairs, the main bedroom is a large open space with no dividing walls. However, a raised platform built from recycled boards has been built to define the bath area. On the platform stands a lovely old free-standing bath. In the guest room the owners have adopted a medical theme - modelling the room to resemble a hospital ward with original hospital beds, bedside tables and blankets.
The roof has been opened up to form a courtyard, which provides a great indoor/outdoor entertaining area. Its walls have been decorated with different types of bird cages.
