| Boys Bedroom Makeover |
| Baby themes are banished in Al's adventurous new room. |

According to Al, the room's occupant, his bedroom was childish. He wanted to make it more grown-up, and brighten it up with his favourite colours such as red, yellow, purple and blue.
First, all the childish decorations, including the wallpaper, were removed. After peeling off the first layer of wallpaper, the stubborn backing paper remained. To remove it easily a stripper (we used Polypaper peel) diluted with hot water was then applied to the wall and left on for 10-20 minutes.
Once all the paper was removed from the walls an oil-based sealer was applied, so that the new paint would not be affected by any residual glue.
The next step was to create some storage space for knick-knacks. Instead of building shelves we made two shadow boxes out of cardboard and newspaper.
Mark out the measurements for the shadow box on the cardboard (see diagram A).
Cut all cardboard pieces to size using a Stanley knife and steel ruler.
Use PVA glue to fix all pieces of cardboard in place so they form three rows of four little storage areas (see diagram B).
Rip newspaper into 2cm-wide strips. Then, using a brush, apply diluted PVA onto the strips and attach them to the shadow box, continuing until you have covered all surfaces (not the back). Allow the layer of papier-m"ch‚ to dry. Apply a second layer of papier-m"ch‚. This will fill any gaps and strengthen the shelves.8 Apply a coat of white primer over all areas of the shelves and allow to dry. Apply further coats of primer until you can no longer see the newspaper.
Apply a layer of colourful acrylic paint to finish your masterpiece. We used left-over paint from the stripes for the walls (see later in this fact sheet).
Use double-sided tape to attach the shelves to the wall.
The curtains also needed replacing. When Al was a baby heavy, thick curtains were installed to allow him to sleep during the day. As those days are long gone, the heavy curtains were replaced with bright red ones. Action-man figures were secured to the bottom of the curtain with black elastic. The action figures can easily be removed when required for use in a game.
A blue blanket was bought for the bed. In keeping with the adventure theme, a felt rocket graphic was stitched onto the blanket.
To make the graphic, cut out the rocket shape from sheets of felt (see diagram C).
Iron facing on to the back of the felt. This will enable the different pieces to be fixed together.
Once you are happy with your design, use a bright strand of wool to stitch the design on to the blanket. The stitching can be easily undone - the benefit of this method is that as tastes change the design can be altered.
It was decided to paint the walls in white with multi-coloured stripes to dado-rail height. The stripes were painted in Skyrocket Red, Crayon Green, Slicker, Express Blue and Carotene, all from Dulux's Wash & Wear 101 range. First, the stripes were drawn on the wall with pencil and a ruler. Masking tape was then applied to outline the edges. Make sure you choose a tape that won't remove the paint underneath when you tear it off (we used Norton's Pro-life blue masking tape). You probably only need one-litre tins of paint, and for some colours you may be able to get away with buying sample pots. The tape needs to be removed as soon as the paint is dry. Some bleeding may occur but is easily fixed with a small paintbrush and a steady hand. (NB: The left-over paints were used to paint the shadow box and a corkboard.)
We added 6mm craftwood doors to the front of the bookshelf. The doors were decorated with a rocket and some stars. These were cut from craftwood and glued onto the doors (see diagrams C and D).
For the final touches a desk, globe, galaxy mobile and some glow-n-the-dark products were added.
