1 The owners of this house wanted to add some rustic charm to their kitchen. To help them achieve this, they employed a company called Corn Field Kitchens, which designs kitchens to suit individual needs. Here, their task was to redesign the room to maximise storage, bench and floor space.
2 First, the cabinets below the bench were replaced with moisture-resistant melamine edged with timber. Before they were put in place, the cabinets were fitted with adjustable legs set to kickboard height.
3 Next the benchtops were replaced. The owners chose Granirex, a granite look-alike made from 93 percent crushed quartz set in resin. Granirex is non-porous, so it does not stain. It's also harder than real granite and is therefore more resistant to scratching. To co-ordinate with the benchtops, a sink was chosen in the same material, but without the finely polished finish.
4 Finally, new wall cabinets were made from recycled timber. Glass panels were inserted in the cabinet doors to create an impression of space. The result: a more functional area with a touch of country charm.
